Maine Electricity Rate: What You Need to Know
Maine electricity averages 29.59 cents per kWh for residential customers as of June 2026, according to the EIA Electric Power Monthly. This is 11.25c above the US average of 18.34c/kWh. The average monthly bill for Maine households is $147 based on typical usage of 527 kWh.
Maine has among the highest electricity rates in the country at 29.59c/kWh (June 2026), about 1.6 times the US average. Your bill has two parts: delivery (the regulated wires charge from Central Maine Power or Versant Power, depending on where you live) and supply. Most Mainers buy supply through the "Standard Offer" - a default rate the Maine PUC sets each year through a competitive bidding process - but customers are free to choose a competitive electricity provider instead. The 2026 Standard Offer rose sharply: the residential supply rate for CMP customers climbed from 10.61c to 12.72c per kWh, adding roughly $11 to the typical monthly bill, driven by higher wholesale natural gas prices that set New England's power costs. Maine's relatively low average usage of 527 kWh per month partly offsets the high per-kWh price.
Generation mix: Natural gas 50%, renewables 35%, hydro 15%. The fuel mix is a primary driver of electricity rates - states with abundant hydro or nuclear tend to have lower rates, while states dependent on imported petroleum (Hawaii) or natural gas pay more.
Year-over-year change: Maine rates rose 5.2% year-over-year as of June 2026. This compares to the US average increase of 5% over the same period.
